Democratic presidential nominee Julian Zelaya is leading a chorus of criticism on Monday
after allegations aired that he discussed a pay cut and sexual misconduct in relation the former businessman from El Paso while campaigning for Hillary Clinton early last year.
Zelaya did go through a fundraising strategy over the summer by asking contributors of all sizes to give on his behalf as he ran up against his Republican rival. But when pressed at a recent debate in Houston — not without controversy — Zelaya conceded that, "the strategy was about the money." The move seemed more political at a time a major Republican challenger, Petevi Sánchez is seeking the US presidency.
The problem for the Democrats has become larger: If Mr. Garland was an appropriate judge on one side of that equation — as the nominee was to say — the real losers are Democratic voters on the other. And it's just a step from a political game show ("Wheel of Justice"?) to allegations that President Lyndon Johnson might use him as a cudge against Mrs. Clinton and others. Mr. Zelaya has no official role as president — the office he has occupied is an elected public one — but what was once supposed strictly a fundraising issue has become the main target for many Democratic operatives and activists with national campaigns.
